Ext. Log Cabin. Mid-1800's - Day

A young COWBOY rides up to a modest log cabin set on a farm. As he climbs down off his horse,
geese snap, chickens CACKLE. A WOMAN, his mother's age, opens the door, observing him with a shotgun.

MARGARET
What can I do for you?

JAKE
Thank you, ma'am. I was wondering if you could use any help around the farm?
Mrs. Johnson sent me.

Margaret studies his thin frame and handsome, but pale face.

JAKE
I notice the roof needs mending.

MARGARET
Have you had anything to eat today?

JAKE
No, ma'am. Not yet.

She gestures he come into the cabin.

INT. CABIN. KITCHEN - DAY

Coffee permeates the kitchen and biscuits sit in the center of the table. Jake quickly glances at
its humble surroundings, and stares at a photo.

MARGARET
Sit down.

JAKE
Thank you, ma'am.

Awkward silences exchange between them as Margaret sets a plate of fried chicken and biscuits, and a cup of coffee before him.

MARGARET
What's your name, son?

JAKE
Jake Hadden.

Margaret's eyes widen; she stumbles. Jake quickly assists her to a chair.

JAKE
Are you all right, maw?

She gazes at him questioning how he knew she was his mother, then notices a pendant worn around Jake's neck.

MARGARET
Paw gave you that pendant, didn't he?

Jake's eyes well with tears.

MARGARET
I gave it to him before I left.

While Jake kneels before her, Margaret begins to cry.

JAKE
Don't cry, maw.

MARGARET
I should never have left you, son. Can you forgive me?

Jake rises to hug her.

Oh this is my favorite so far! I can just smell the biscuits and see the pendant sticking out of his shirt.

You are such a good writer-that I always want to know what comes next!

A good chance for Streep to do "careworn" and let some lines show in that alabaster face of hers!

Okay, so I knew as soon as you described Jake as a coyboy, that Jake Gyllenhall (sp?) was going to be the most popular pick; and I was determined to not pick him, but I think he was the best pick.

As far as Margaret's character, I chose "other" because I kept imagining Sissy Spacek for the part.

Either that or Kathy Bates...

Hello, Petra. Thank you, to keep in contact with me again. I felt happy with your last comment. In 2005 I have done a course of scuba diving and I didn´t felt very comfortable so at the moment, when I need to dive I do it in apenea. Thank very much to enjoy my photos. :))

Petra: As usual, great job.
But I'm wondering what is next?
Is there a twist about to happen - picture scene from psycho here...... or the happy fad-to-black-the-end scene? LOL
